ABS systems release the brake pressure as you brake on hard braking to stop the wheels from locking up & skidding, allowing you to still steer.
There are other system with in ABS like traction control & braking assist.
These systems have a sensor on each wheel that detects if the brake pedal is pressed & a wheel is not rotating, it will then take the pressure off allowing the wheel to turn to allow the vehicle to steer. ABS can be felt on the brake pedal under heavy braking or on slippery surfaces.
Traction control works in reverse, if a wheel is moving faster than another, the system can apply the brakes to that wheel to regain traction.
Brake assist will apply more brake pressure that the driver.
As technology progresses more will be made of these systems as they are safety systems.
The picture below shows that the car on the right can steer.
